The Asparagus Pea is an interesting vegetable that is also called Winged Pea and does not belong to the Pea or Asparagus genus. It gets its name from the deep red pea like flowers and the winged pods that taste similar to asparagus. The Asparagus Pea is native to the Mediterranean and the Near East but does surprisingly well in Manitoba. It has been grown for over 400 years and is now regaining popularity. The winged pods should be used when less than 1" long and are great in stir fries. The plants grow about 10 inches high and spread to about 2 feet which makes them ideal for container growing or the flowerbed.
