This category of pole bean has edible podded beans often called snap beans. Pole beans need a support such as a fence to climb on and generally produce over a longer season than bush beans. Because they are grown on a support, the pods are held high off the ground and harvesting is easier and well as fewer disease problems. Purple pods turn green when steamed. Purple Peacock is one of the most delicious purple podded beans and are even delicious fresh off the vine. Early Riser Bean is a green flat podded snap that is very productive and produces all summer long. Kentucky Wonder Pole is a nice all purpose bean which can be steamed, frozen or canned. The dry seed can also be used for baked beans.
