(pre-1846) Originated in Central America and is known as Frijoles de Tampico or Frijoles Negros. Black Turtle beans were largely unknown in the United States prior to the war with Mexico in 1846-1848, with the exceptions of Louisiana and other parts of the Gulf Coast. It was introduced to American gardeners in 1848 under the name Turtle Soup Bean. Can be used for refried beans, black beans and rice, soup or stews. Vining bush plant. (100 days for dry beans)
